5 Reasons Why Moving to Greece Was the Best Decision Ever

It’s been about five years since this Dutch girl was waving in Amsterdam and driving a truck full of stuff to Athens to renovate a house in Glyfada. You’re probably wondering why a Dutch girl would move to Greece, especially during the current crisis in Greece. Well, folks, it’s been one of the biggest decisions of my life. I grew up in the Netherlands and now live and work as a copywriter in Greece. I’ve been coming to Greece every summer for 15 years and a simple flirt on a Greek boulevard changed my life forever. Here are my top five reasons why moving to Greece was the best decision I ever made.

1. The people are great

I just love living among the Greeks. There is a noun in Greek philotimo, or filotimo – which means something like “love of honor”. The concept is almost impossible to fully translate into English, but it describes a way of life, of helping each other and having respect for others. It is one of the most important things in Greek culture. You just have to be there with the people to experience it. It’s really impressive.

2. A spanakopita is the most delicious lunch on earth

It may sound funny, but these spinach pies are incredibly delicious. The savory treat consists of spinach, feta, and a crispy dough. There are bakeries on every corner here and for a good spanakopita you don’t have to pay more than 2.50 euros.

3. The language is quite impressive

I have wanted to delve into learning a new language for years. Moving to another country and becoming fully immersed in one language was the perfect opportunity. Greek is not the easiest language to master. But it is a fun and cultural experience. English is widely spoken in most urban areas, but learning the language gives you an unparalleled richness.

4. The historic architecture is incredible

The Acropolis, right in the center of Athens. It is one of the most breathtaking historical sites in the world. There are also plenty of hiking opportunities in the nearby mountains. They are home to perfect picnic spots. And there is history, history, and more history on every corner. Definitely one of the main reasons why my move to Greece was so great.

5. The weather isn’t always super hot

In the Netherlands I was mainly used to a lot of drizzle and dark days. Greece is not called the land of light for nothing. The sun shines here almost always, I prefer to avoid the sun now, but there is nothing better than looking at the clear sky and turquoise sea. Winter lasts three months and with an average of 15 degrees it can be called spring. Plus, who doesn’t like 30-35 degrees in the summer? There are also the endless summer evenings here that I can never get enough of.
These were my top five reasons why moving to Greece was the best decision ever for me. Definitely consider adding a visit to Greece to your bucket list. You won’t regret it 😉.
