In Northern Greece you can buy beautiful houses at very competitive prices. More and more people are discovering the beauty of this part of Greece. Halkidiki for example is a popular region in Northern Greece, many people buy a second home here. We have a small selection of houses for sale in this section, but on request we can search for a house for sale in Northern Greece or Halkidiki.
Where can you find a property for sale in Halkidiki?
Some people suggest that Chalkidiki is one of Greece’s best kept secrets. It’s not so well known among Dutch holidaymakers – and did you know it’s not even an island? – but a very interesting part of North East Greece. Only an hour’s drive from Thessaloniki airport?
Halkidiki consists of three peninsulas that extend out into the Aegean Sea like three fingers (or legs, or teeth of Poseidon’s trident, as they are also known). They are easily accessible from Thessaloniki, where many direct flights from the Netherlands arrive (Transavia).
But why is Halkidiki a great place to buy a house? It has great beaches surrounded by rugged red mountains and pretty little villages among the pine trees. You are not dependent on ferries (like some islands), and it has that authentic, relaxed Greek atmosphere that many people love.
There are archaeological sites in abundance and it is described by tourist blogs as an ‘up-and-coming’ alternative to the popular islands and a bit of ‘ancient Greece’.
The nearest (western) leg is the most touristy, Kassandra. It is a mix of beautiful beaches, resorts and traditional villages. It includes Sani, a resort you may have heard of for its thermal spa, and a great location for families with a gently sloping beach.
In the area you can go kite surfing, water skiing and every year in July a big swimming event takes place in Toronéos, a 26 km race attracts swimmers from all over the world. Music festivals are also a popular attraction for the area.
Buying a house in Sithonia, Halkidiki
A spine of mountains and pine forests characterizes the second peninsula of Sithonia. It has a golf course, with many secret coves overlooking Mount Athos on the third “leg”. For many, this is the best part, with around 100 white sandy beaches and plenty to do, from boat trips, cycling through the inland vineyards to diving. It is possible to buy a three-bedroom maisonette in Sithonia for around €115,000.
The famous Mount Athos, the famous Holy Mountain with 20 monasteries, is definitely worth a visit, if you know how to organize it well (there is some paperwork involved) and also if you are a man (women are not allowed to visit).
If you like Greece, this area is definitely worth a research trip. It could be one for the long term investor, or for anyone who likes easy access.
