The 2018 tourism figures show that Greece’s popularity among foreign visitors has never been higher. And even higher numbers are expected for 2019. According to the Greek Ministry of Tourism, Greece welcomed a whopping 35 million international tourists in 2018, surpassing the previous record of around 30 million set in 2017.
Crete and the Ionian Islands, particularly Zakynthos, Kerkyra (Corfu) and Paxi, are some of the most sought-after locations to buy a home in 2019. The Ministry’s data shows that the Ionian Islands have seen an impressive increase in the number of international flights, leading to longer stays and increased tourist revenue.
Buying a house in Greece remains relatively affordable compared to other European countries. However, the improved situation could soon lead to a rise in prices. Greece’s challenging economic situation, particularly its external debt and EU austerity measures, have contributed to a booming property market. At one time, it seemed unlikely that Greece would remain in the Eurozone, but the country has avoided bankruptcy and is now showing signs of economic recovery.
For the Dutch and other Europeans, travelling to a second home in Greece has become easier and more pleasant. This year, the German company Fraport AG acquired 14 regional airports in Greece and invested 400 million euros to improve them and expand capacity. These airports include Kavala, Thessaloniki, Kerkyra, Skiathos, Mytilene (Lesbos), Aktion, Kefalonia, Zakynthos, Mykonos, Kos, Santorini, Chania (Crete), Rhodes and Samos.
This is a great time to consider a property deal in Greece, as prices can rise at any time. Knowing how to negotiate can help you get the best value for your money. A real estate agent in Greece can help you with this. The Greek property market not only offers good value in 2019; with so many different islands and an attractive mainland, there are plenty of opportunities. You could opt for a modern villa in stylish Mykonos, famous for its vibrant nightlife and chic restaurants, which attracts international stars.
On the other hand, on islands like Paros, Naxos, Tinos or Syros you will find a more traditional lifestyle. The Ionian Islands, like Corfu and Kefalonia, are famous for their charm, beautiful bays and old houses on the beach.
Crete, the largest island in Greece, is a favourite destination for many Dutch people. The western region, especially Apokoronas between Chania and Rethymnon, is known for its traditional villages and proximity to the beach. It is not uncommon to buy a plot of land and build a villa there, alongside more characteristic village houses or beach apartments. Prices for one and two bedroom apartments in small developments with a shared pool and within walking distance of the beach range from €60,000 to €90,000, while a small villa or traditional village house can cost between €100,000 and €200,000.
