Despite its weak economy, Greece is slowly turning into a top destination for entrepreneurs, remote workers and digital nomads. The growth of Facebook groups, blogs and websites on the topic is proof that Greece is a hotspot for a large group of remote workers. Read why here.
With its rich history, strong culture and perfect weather, Greece is a great compromise for remote workers looking for sea and sun without having to sit on a plane for 10 hours to get back to their home country. With the perfect combination of sea, mountains, cities, islands and small villages, Greece definitely has a lot to offer.
Greece is located on the edge of Europe and Asia, making it a melting point of history, culture and food, and an ideal base for digital nomads. In addition to the country itself, the beautiful islands and many archaeological sites provide an inspiring backdrop for a generation of workers who are tired of being stuck within four walls.
Greece has one of the lowest costs of living in the EU, although Athens is generally considered more expensive than many other places. Nevertheless, rent, utilities, groceries and public transport are quite affordable compared to many other European capitals, which certainly plays in Greece’s favour.
One of the most important, if not the most important requirement for a teleworker is internet connectivity. The internet connection is very good in most places, and it varies from nine MBPS (in Patras) to 13 MBPS (Santorini and Mykonos). This may not be as great as other cities in Europe, but it is certainly good.
Compared to many other European countries, Greece is a safe country. Sure, you might encounter the occasional pickpocket on public transport, but all in all, Greece, and even Athens, is extremely safe for travelers, digital nomads, and entrepreneurs.
This point may sound silly to some, but for those of us who are not early risers, it means a lot. If you work with a company in Europe, you are one or two hours ahead of their work schedule.
Every digital nomad will agree: there’s nothing like a good party after a hard day’s work. Whether you choose the Greek capital, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Rhodes, Patras, Rethymnon or Mykonos, Greece has a dynamic nightlife and the Greeks know how to party and will definitely show you how to have a great time without going broke.
There may not be as many co-working spaces as in other Western countries, but since Greece is the kind of place where you can drink coffee for three hours, you won’t have a hard time finding a cafe to work in. Whether you’re in Athens or on a quiet island, cafes (with wi-fi) are plentiful in Greece. And since Greece has a late-night culture, you won’t have a hard time finding a cafe open after 7pm for your “morning” Skype call with your client in Boston.
Fueled by creativity and incubators, startups have been popping up like mushrooms in recent years. Moreover, more and more people are leaving their 9 to 5 jobs to work for themselves and follow their dreams, whether it’s opening a new bar or a new cosmetics line. That’s why there are excellent networking opportunities, Facebook groups (such as Work Remote in Greece or Digital Nomads Athens) and various meetups where digital nomads and remote workers can connect with like-minded people.
